Now, my focus is helping and empowering women, especially single moms or divorced women, and for them and then the youth. The underprivileged, underserved Asian-American youth for example. Iâm trying to empower our own community to speak for themselves, to have a voice in our community and to achieve their dreams and goals. I teach them through the media and also financial education. Thatâs what my focus is. Itâs come to that.
Thatâs a wonderful cause. What are your family traditions that you still honor and still practice until now?
Stay humble and modest. I donât spend money lavishly whether I have it or not. I like organized thinking and planning. My dad has always been that way and he has always have had plans for everything at all times. One of the things that my parents always used to tell me, especially my dad, itâs like a proverb. âWhen you lose money, you have lost a little bit. When you have lost a friend, you have lost a lot, but when you lose your health, you lost everything.â They always emphasize the fact that health is the most important thing you need to consider because if you lose your health, itâs hard to achieve things. For example, one of the most successful billionaire, he had all the money in the world to do anything he wanted. He built an empire, Apple, Steve Jobs. He passed away at an early age, but what do you do? I know he left a legacy, but when Iâm successful, I will probably want to spend so much time with people that I love around me more. Then you can continue on and on building an empire, but we always have to think about the simplest things in life that matters the most our family, our spouse, family, kids and our parents and our friends. People we care about.
I try to carve out some time of my busy schedule every week to spend time with my best friends. My mom is still in Korea, my family still in Korea, but I have my husband and my two dogs, and I have a lot of friends here who care about me as much as I care about them. I want to spend more time with them. Pretty much thatâs it. Being patient and listen more. I always tell people to listen more. This is an advice that I give everybody, no matter what industry youâre in. Show and tell, donât just talk about it. Especially in the media industry, itâs all about show and tell. Whether you have some outline or a proposal, it doesnât matter. Anybody can write about things or ideas or proposals. You have to show it. When I started my cooking show, itâs the same thing. When I started producing Asian Voices Show, the same thing. The TV stations wanted to see what it is. You can tell them, âI have an idea of a great show.â
Then there comes sacrifice. Itâs about your time and efforts. I donât mind that at all because like I said, âI learned about sacrifice sacrificing myself,â my time through my grandmother. I wouldnât say itâs so much a sacrifice but more of an investment in the projects that I really want to do. You donât get paid, but you spend a lot of time and efforts in creating something to show the stations. I had to shoot three full episodes on my cooking show to show the station and when they liked it, then I had to produce the remaining eight or ten episodes. Thatâs how it goes. I would like to tell people, âDonât just talk about it, do it, execute it.â Thatâs what Iâd like to tell people. Unless you do it, it doesnât really matter. Itâs just talk.
All these things that I have done as a kid, I donât know who taught me or told me. I was a special kid. I joke about it, but I think I am here for a reason. The other day I had an interview with Joshua as well and his radio show, but I was telling him that, âI almost died twice as a kid.â Once when I was six months old and then another time when I was like five or six years old. I almost drowned in the pool. I was struck by lightning twice. Iâm like, âYeah, but I am fine. Iâm here now.â There must be a reason Iâm here, to do something that matters to people. Thatâs why just embrace each day, each moment that Iâm here and that Iâm here for a reason. Iâm always never afraid to learn new things. Everybody says, âIâm too old for this and that,â but I always say, âAge is just a number.â As long as you feel differently, you feel younger, which I do. I hang out with all the time to twenty, 30, 40. It doesnât matter who they are. As long as you have a good time with people that I enjoy being around with, thatâs what matters.
Another thing that I wanted to point out was that thereâs a book. Write a book a month or however long it takes for people to read. One of the books that I relate to a lot is Think and Grow Rich book by Napoleon Hill. A lot of successful people have read it. I only read it a year ago. I didnât know about this book, but after I finished reading the book. It took me only one week to read this book, but I realized, âItâs already in me. I have to keep doing things the way the book tells you.â At some point along the way when I moved to the US, I lost that. I know for whatever reason your life changes people you are with that are different, your work is different. Somewhere along the line, there was a gap in my life a few years ago that I lost touch with that part of me that has always been there inside me.
Even growing up, I always had this burning desire to do things when I was a kid and I achieved that. I make things happen, since I was little kid. Whoeverâs here and havenât heard of this book or read this book, I would say order it from Amazon, free shipping, and just buy it. If you donât like to read, itâs okay. You donât have to read the whole book in a month or in a week. Itâs like you have it. I always have it next to my bed and read a chapter a day. Iâve been reading so many times, but every time you read it, it affirms that this is something that you need to do. Practice, execute everyday on a daily basis.
Thereâs an important quote, âWhatever the mind of a person can conceive and believe, it can achieve.â That is so true. If you have a goal, if you have a dream, passion, just think about it. Visualize in your head and try to execute anything, the things that are needed to accomplish that. You canât think about it and fantasize about it saying, âI want to be a millionaire,â but if you donât do anything about it, it wonât happen. You have to have certain goals and plans and have to execute those plans. Nothing comes for free. Then you have to give in order to receive. Thatâs so important. Start by writing your affirmations every day, read that or speak it out loud.
Number two, organize your plans and thinking. Start with daily plans and goals, weekly, monthly, yearly, and five, ten years later. I have all those goals laid out for myself as well, but daily is the most important thing. No matter what you do, before you go to bed, have a little notebook there and then write it down. I know I typed everything in my computer, but I always have a notepad right next to me because itâs different when you open the computer or before you open it, you just write the date and the time and then say, âThese are the things I need to get done,â and cross off each one as you complete them. Thatâs so important and it also helps me organize things better and make sure that I am doing everything I need to do every day. Thatâs pretty much as far as the business side goes, business advice. I would like to tell people that.
What does the word âpowerâ mean to you?
To me, it means to be able to do what you want to do whenever you want to do it. Thatâs all it is.
What does the word âsuccessâ mean to you?
Success, for me, is having to accomplish what I have done, what I am doing. There can be many successes. I am successful as far as my health goes because Iâm taking care of myself. Physically and mentally, I am always doing things to nurture myself and nourish myself, my mind and body. I believe I am successful in that sense. Businesswise, am I successful? I have had tremendous success in the past. I am going towards an even bigger success to accomplish a bigger goal and dream. Whatever it is that somebody wants to get done, you have to set the milestones and plans and then the goals and then once you accomplish that, then I believe thatâs success. Relationship-wise, I have a wonderful husband who supports whatever I do. We worked together 24/7 and we do things together. Iâm very successful at accomplishing my goal of having a great, wonderful relationship. Success can be many things, but you have to be able to accomplish your ultimate goals and dreams that itâs the result of a success.
What will you not compromise or tolerate in your life?
I cannot tolerate people who are dishonest. I donât like people who lie to themselves and to other people. Those two things I canât tolerate, and laziness. I was telling you about my past growing up. I donât tolerate lazy people that much. Laziness, lies, and dishonesty, those are the things that I canât tolerate.
